Hi Backpackers,
Do keep these instructions handy & remember that your passport is the most critical document when traveling abroad. The passport should always be with you when you are traveling. However, in case you lose it for any reason, do not panic & please do follow the list of instruction given below.
What To Do When Your Indian Passport Is Lost Abroad
-File a Police Complaint
As soon as you realize your passport is lost or stolen, go to the nearest police station and file a complaint. You’ll receive a copy of the police report for the same. This document is very important as it will serve as proof of loss/theft of your passport and other valuables if any. Also, a police report will help you with embassy related formalities like applying for an emergency certificate or new passport.
-Contact The Indian Embassy
The next step for you would be to contact the nearest Indian Embassy and let them know about your lost/stolen passport. Indian Embassies abroad are there to extend help to distressed Indian citizens in that country. Here is the complete list of Indian Missions abroad as given in the Ministry of External Affairs Website :
Find the one closest to you from the above link and get their contact number and email for further communication.
-Apply For a New Passport or Emergency Certificate
So now you are in the Indian Embassy, ready to get back your travel document to go back to India. At this point, you have two options ;
(a) Apply for a new replacement passport – The Indian Embassy/Consulate will aid you with your application for a new passport. It’ll take a minimum of 1 week for you to get your passport via this method. The reason is that passports are printed and India and then sent abroad to the Embassy or Consulate where you applied for it. Here are the documents you need to apply for a new passport:
-Copy of lost passport (front & back pages)
-Copy of passport lost/stolen police report
-Passport size photos (4-6)
-Copy of visa and air tickets
-Personal application detailing the reason for the immediate issue of a new passport
-Apply for an Emergency Certificate – If you don’t have time to wait around and want to travel soon, just apply for an Emergency Certificate. It’s a one-time use travel document that authorizes an Indian citizen who has lost their passport, to return back to India. To apply for an Emergency Certificate, you need :
-Application by submitting an EAP-2 form
-Passport size photo (4-6)
-Copy of passport (front and back pages)
-Police report concerning loss/theft of passport
-With both the options you’d need to get your visa stamped again.
(b) Apply For Re-issue of Visa
Any visas that you might have had would also be lost with the loss of your passport. You can get them back by visiting the respective embassy of the country that issued your visa. Again, for this process, you’d be required to have with you the copy of your old visa and police report. Also, your new passport would be needed.
-Reschedule Your Flight
With the loss/theft of your passport, travel outside of the foreign country won’t be possible until you receive your new passport of Emergency Certificate. Reschedule your flight if need be, by calling up your airline and intimating them about the situation. The earlier you explain your situation to the airlines, the better chance you’ve of not wasting much money on rescheduling your flight.
-Claim Travel Insurance
In the precautions section, we had mentioned taking a travel insurance before flying abroad. Once you are back in the country, that would be the time to redeem your insurance by filing a claim for loss of passport. Contact the insurance company at the earliest and keep Police Report and receipts related to costs incurred due to passport loss handy.
By following the above-mentioned precautions and steps, you can easily gloss over the theft of your passport with minimal loss of time and money.
