RICH HISTORY

This year the NAROPA festival is celebrating 1000 years. Once every 12 years, in the year of Monkey, half a million people from across the Himalayas gather in Ladakh, India, to celebrate Naropa’s life in one of the largest events in the history of Ladakh. This festival includes several rare cultural events that are believed to grant spiritual liberation upon sight. The event culminates with the display of the The Six Bone Ornaments ,one of the holiest treasures of Himalayan Buddhism.

LOCATION & TIME

While in the past few years Ladakh has become famous because of challenging road trips and surreal locations however Ladakh’s history can be traced back to the Neolithic era and appears in early historic accounts of Herodutus and Ptolemy. Apart from being one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the world to this day, Ladakh is culturally rich and is a guardian to ancient artwork, architecture and Buddhist Traditions unique only to this region.

EVENTS

As a Tribute to NAROPA celebrating 1000 years, many of the world’s renowned artists including Vishal Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Shreya Ghoshal, KK & many more will be performing live every evening at the Hemis Monastery. Yes you read that right ! imagine a concert at a 15th Century Monastery tucked away in the a remote Himalayan valley. Oh and the events also feature the largest 3D Video Projection in the Himalayas, first of its kind in the world.

NAROPA 2016 Legacy & Liberation Through Sight

Once every 12 years, in the year of Monkey, half a million people from across the Himalayas gather in Ladakh, India, to celebrate Naropa’s life in one of the largest events of the decade. Likened to the “Kumbh Mela of Himalayas,” this month-long festival includes several rare cultural events that are believed to grant spiritual liberation upon sight.

The culminating event is the display of the famed, sacred Six Bone Ornaments belonging to Naropa, the 11th century Indian saint, by His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa, head of the Drukpa Order. The Six Bone Ornaments are some of the holiest treasures of Himalayas, and are the symbolic origin of many of the foundational practices of Himalayan Buddhism.

Ladakh : Pristine & Surreal

HEMIS : Built in the 15th century by Staktsang Raspa, in the reign of  King Sengye Namgyal. The Hemis Monastery is the most renowned and biggest monastery of Ladakh. It is tucked away in a hidden valley just outside the city.

WEATHER : During the month of September, day temperature in Ladakh is expected to be pleasant, around 20-24°C. And nights are chilly with temperature getting as low as 2 to 4°C.
